How to Hook Up Fuel Gauges on a Boat
Safe Boat Propane Installations My intent with this article is not to encourage you to install your own propane system leave that to a pro but to help you determine if your existing system or the system on your prospective next boat is safe. The standards are much more detailed than what I present here but I think I have covered the key elements. A licensed gas fitter should be consulted prior to commencing any work on an LPG system. What are the relevant laws and standards for propane installations on boats. Show how a proper propane installation should be done. I’ll break down the system one piece at a time showing photos of bad examples and why they are wrong. Some photos below will show why I think the CE standards are dangerous. Unfortunately they are allowed to import boats into North America unchallenged.
How to install a fuel tank gauge on a boat
September 30, , The simple fact is many of us using Smartcraft enjoyed many years of digital features way before the rest of the industry produced NMEA This is a look at a prototype that Merc gave me. I received it with no installation instructions.
Intellitronix is an electronic digital accessories company based out of Eastlake,Ohio. We are an industry leader in LED digital gauges, panels, and performance.
Thank Neptune the winter is over. But where to begin? Should I even attempt this? Will it end up costing me a lot more money? All very good questions and due to the many styles of propulsion and vessel systems, you should read up using your specific owners or service manual. This will be your first step. Your spring prep is directly related to the comprehensive winterizing of your engine and boat systems. Charging and cleaning your batteries is a good way to start your boat dewinterization checklist.
Fueled by frustration: Fixing faulty fuel gauges
Last owner had it rebuilt and sold it to me with 50 hrs on rebuild. I’ve put on hrs tops since I’ve owned it. Boat has treated me very well, no problems what so ever. Full interior including downstairs pads – mattress have been re-upholstered last summer, look brand new and updated.
Modular Instrument System Suzuki Modular Instrument System (SMIS) uses an easy to connect and Function gauges. This easy to set up and install system can be used with nearly any boat and DFB thru DF Suzuki Outboard. Connected to the NMEA ® compatible system, the gauges can display real-time readings Fuel Gauge Display Dual.
The white wire in this fuel gauge grounds the sender body directly to the frame. An accurate gauge helps keep one from running out of fuel, or at least indicates when more is needed. However, some believe that cars generate gas or that someone else will fill the tank. Does that sound familiar? Faulty fuel gauges are a common problem in collector cars. Sometimes this is due to sitting in an unfavorable environment, and sometimes it is due to old age; everything wears out sooner or later.
And, it is a sensitive instrument.

Engine Instrument Wiring Made Easy Engine instrument gauges fall into three categories, and there are differences in the terminals and wiring. By Ed Sherman June 6, The vast majority of recreational boats in service today are still using analogue instrumentation systems. More modern digital, NMEA-networked, and multifunction gauges may be all the buzz, but the reality is that most boats are still equipped with the same analogue set-ups that have been in use for decades. The insides of instrument panels can get a little crowded, but untangling it is all a matter of circuits, senders, and wire colors.
Advertisement I recently provided an answer to a visitor’s question on boats.
There are 2 situations whereby the fuel gauge does not read correctly. What normally happens is that even if you fill up the tank to the full the gauge will not point all the way to the full level and by the time the tank is 1/2 full or even 3/4 full the gauge shows empty which can be a bit of pain.
This ski boat rental will easily seat up to 18 persons with seating, water sport gear, and more room to spare. It also has a 60 gallon fuel tank lasting between hours normal running conditions. This boat rental at Lake Powell also has the pickle-fork bow creating a lot of room up front. Waves will not come over the front bow as easily as the X or X-Star boat rentals. Here are a few of the options we have on this Lake Powell competition boat rental; the 8.
The wake of the X-Star is dialed in at any speed, a perfect ramp and launch is given at every trick that is attempted. This is the Lake Powell wakeboard boat rental for those generally wanting to wakeboard, or wake surf. The fuel tank is 53 gallons lasting between hours normal boat running time. Seating capacity allowed is 12 persons, plus there is extra storage space under the seats, and back compartments for anything else you may want to put away.
Now offering the new MasterCraft X-Star 15 passenger.

Could you pls explain the theory of how this extra resistor works. I have a simular setup on my rudder indicator and I measures a spair gauge I have as you advised which turned out to be ohms as OP so I will try your setup next week when I am on my boat and report back. If it works it will save me lots of extra wiring and special costly oil pressure and water temp senders.
I imagine the “special” senders are just this, incorporating a fixed resistor in series with the variable sensing element. VDO have some great looking instruments and sensors but I find their website not to be overly informative. Increased current will pull the gauge needle further to the right giving the elevated readout – this is what the OP was observing.
-Connect (black) wire from the WEMA sending unit to gauge hook-up. If your gauge has color coded hook-ups, maintain this If your gauge has color coded hook-ups, maintain this coding as you connect the sender and ground wires.
How-To Library — Service: Thanks to everyone who gave me specs and advice to sort this out. Apparently with a combination of new fuel tanks and new senders there’s a bigger need to calibrate both gauge and sender than there used to be. This is what you will need: Digital Multi-meter Resistors at the following values: Optionally you can just set the sender to these values.
A 10VDC power source. Wall warts can do this and be found anywhere from RS to K-Mart. Needle nose or small pliers Patience! You can try to calibrate the sender first which is much easier than getting the gauge out. It might just be enough. You can also look at your gauge and take a reading off your sender while its in the tank and see how close it is to the corresponding values above. Or you can do pull the gauge and make sure its done the first time.
The following messages I’ll go step by step with corresponding photos.
Outboard Fuel Line Problems
Best method is to fill the fuel cell completely. The guage should read full. If not, then slowly turn the screw until the sender reads full. If you remove the hot wire from the sending unit the gauge should go to empty, if you touch it to the ground the gauge should go to full. If it does both it’s the sending unit, if doesn’t it’s the gauge. The new centroid sending units they’re selling seem to work really well.
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS SHORT SWEEP ELECTRIC GAUGES Rev. C Mounting Replace light bulb with the same number bulb as the one removed. These gauges can be mounted in-dash or in Auto Meter mounting solutions (panels, cups, pods, etc.) wire from fuel tank to gauge. If a new hole is drilled in the firewall a grommet is recommended.
I can’t find those part numbers you listed for either of the gauges. Do they look like any of the ones on this page here? I also checked another OMC trim gauge manual that I have. Black with Brown stripe is ground. White with Tan stripe is signal and should be connected to “S” terminal. Key on power should go to “I” terminal It sounds like you have it hooked up correctly so it is either your gauge or something is wrong with the White wire with the tan stripe.
But, there may be two types of gauges, and they may have opposite “sense” of scale.

Fuel tank, Facet pump, and fuel lines installed on a Challenger. Click on images to enlarge. Sealing Threaded Connections as appear on the Facet pump The first question that will arise when you go to install the hose barbs on the Facet is, “What type of thread sealer do I use? If you have hose barbs that are also brass, no sealer is required.
The threads, being pipe threads, are tapered and the design of the thread is such that they create an interference fit as you torque them down.

No, our process does not allow us to move fittings that are molded in during the molding process. Moeller fuel tanks are designed for the recreational boating industry. Any modification or change is at the risk of the owner and also voids any warranty that accompanies the product. Cross linked polyethylene has unique properties which make it an ideal material for fuel tanks. These same properties make it difficult for sealant materials to adhere long term to any part of the tank.
This is the reason that the tank fittings are molded into the wall of the tank. This also ensures a leak-free connection to the fuel tank. How much space should I allow above the tank for the fill hose connection? Additional space will be required if you are using a 90 degree hose connection. How do I purchase directly from Moeller?
